I had this conversation with my husband a few days ago. Feel free to mock me.
Me: Hey, you know my friend from twitter that lives in the Philippines? I think she knows Spanish!
Hubs: {no reaction} Doesn't surprise me.
Me: Why not?
Hubs: Well, it *was* a Spanish colony, just like us....
Me: WHAAAAAA????
Hubs: {looks at me for the first time} You *did* know that, right? RIGHT?
Me: NO!! But that's all the way in Asia! Like near Japan or something! Isn't it part of one of *those* countries?
Hubs: {raises voice} Oh my God, Zelma, please tell me you're joking!! Spain had colonies all over the world!
Me: I swear to God, I didn't know that!!
Hubs: Unbelievable!
Me: {slowly} Wait.... so maybe THAT'S why her last name is Perez! {lightbulb going off over my head}
Hubs: OH MY GOD ZELMA!! {facepalm}
Me: What? You're surprised that I *don't* know something?
Hubs: Yes! You always have to know everything!
Me: Well, there you go, I'm human.
Hubs: Pfft
TRUE STORY!!!
For the record, I felt incredibly stupid, but I'm not going to admit that to him, am I?
You can start laughing now. Wait, were you laughing already? Meh!

The Power of One: Week 5 Recap
I don't know if you have noticed, but it's been 3 weeks since I posted my weekly recap. The main reason I didn't post during these weeks was pure and simple: shame. Not because I have gained weight, I would have posted that. But because I have been stressed out. You see, as a baker, I have my calm weeks, and my stressful weeks. And the past two weeks? Have been stressful. I received several last-minute orders, and getting everything ready on time AND keeping my blog was way too much stress.
So this week I'm preparing for Valentine's Day. A nightmare for a baker, right? Well, yes and no. This time I'm prepared and am organizing myself to get all orders out on time.
OK, getting back to the topic. Because of all my stress, I haven't been really disciplined on my eating habits nor my workouts. But I didn't completely fall off the wagon either. Now all I have to do is pick myself up again and get back on track.
Let's see what happened since last time:
Last weight: 193.7
This week’s weight: 193.2
Weight lost this week: 0.5 lbs
Total weight lost so far: 2.2 lbs
Total weight to lose: 63.2 lbs
First Goal: 10 lbs (Nope, not there yet.)
Accomplishments from last week:
Setbacks: I think the fact that I abandoned my tracking for a couple of weeks was really my downfall. Even if I hadn't kept a strict diet or exercise routine, just tracking it keeps me in check, so I'm definitely going back to that.
Goals for this week:
Here's to a great week!

Accomplishments from last week:
- I worked out on Monday and again today.
- Kept a food log. Still liking My Fitness Pal, although still bummed that it doesn't have a mobile app for my Blackberry.
- I'm drinking tons of water! About 9-12 glasses a day. Woot!

- Eat more protein & veggies and less sugar
- Keep up my 30 Day Shred workouts. Do at least 4 days this week.
Here's to a great week!

Tackle it Tuesday 8: Lil man's study area
This week I tackled lil man's study area. Yes, his desk is pretty clear, but that's because he does his homework there. But the ottoman is a different story. Every time lil man leaves something on top of this desk, I move it to the ottoman to make room for him to work, and guess what? It piles up pretty quickly!
[caption id="attachment_909" align="aligncenter" width="518" caption="Ottoman before"][/caption]
Yesterday, lil man was having his speech therapy here, so I decided to clean up. I might be messy, but I'm not letting other people see it, no way!
[caption id="attachment_908" align="aligncenter" width="518" caption="Ottoman after"][/caption]
Amazingly enough, it wasn't that hard to put everything in its place. If only I did it every time, and not wait until everything is piled up. But then I wouldn't have anything to post here, wouldn't I? :)
Happy tackling!

Wordless Wednesday 16: Bath time!
Lil man loves his Build-a-Bear friends! This time he figured if he had to take a bath, his friends should too. So he took his bear brush and went to work. Fun!

Tackle it Tuesday 7: Gettin' busy at the bakery
I wasn't going to post any Tackle it Tuesdays this week because I thought "well, I really haven't tackled anything worth posting. *sadface*
But then I realized, heck, I've been PLENTY busy at the bakery! THAT's why I haven't been able to do stuff around the house. So I might as well post what the EFF I've been doing all week!
So here goes. The week started with a cake for a friend's birthday. She wanted black with fuschia dots. The drinks were my idea, because, obviously. What do you think? Nice, huh?
I also received a call from an old classmate from high school. She writes for a local parenting magazine - which is pretty awesome, actually - and told me they were planning a birthday edition to celebrate their own first birthday. They were doing a "faux-bithday" bash at a local playground and needed cupcakes. The theme was jungle animals, which gave me room to work with plenty of colors. Here are the cupcake toppers I made for them:
And here are all the cupcakes on display at the table:
Oh, and she also mentioned they needed kids, so she asked if Lil man was available to participate. Umm... OF COURSE!! He had a blast. Here is him playing soccer with a balloon:
And here is him having fun before the cake pictures:
OK, so my house is a mess, but I still kept plenty busy! Happy tackling!

Wordless Wednesday 15: More Self-Portraits
Why is it that every time I pick up my camera, I find tons of pics in them? Every. Single. Time.
This time, even his stuffed bear got in on the action!

The Power of One: Week 2 Recap
Well, it's been two weeks since I joined the Sisterhood of Shrinking Jeans and started my new journey to weight loss and exercise. So far I haven't seen much progress, but this week I feel satisfied about my accomplishments. Sure, I didn't lose a whole lot of weight, but I finally started doing things right, and found the discipline and motivation to keep at it.
Let's see what happened during my second week:
Last week’s weight: 194.2
This week’s weight: 193.7
Weight lost this week: 0.5 lbs (OK, so it's not even a pound, but I'm OK with it. Read on.)
Total weight lost so far: 1.7 lbs
Total weight to lose: 63.7 lbs
First Goal: 10 lbs (Nope, not there yet.)
Accomplishments from last week:
Setbacks: Like I said before, I didn't change my eating habits too much, only the portions and snacking, because of my food log. So I shouldn't be shocked by my lack of weight loss. But that's OK. For some reason, I'm feeling OK with this, and am now motivated to really make some changes.
Goals for this week:
So there you have it. Not a wildly successful week, but at least I'm motivated to keep it up and make more changes.
Here's to a different week than last!

This week’s weight: 193.7
Weight lost this week: 0.5 lbs (OK, so it's not even a pound, but I'm OK with it. Read on.)
Total weight lost so far: 1.7 lbs
Total weight to lose: 63.7 lbs
First Goal: 10 lbs (Nope, not there yet.)
Accomplishments from last week:
- I worked out! Wanted to do 4 days of 30 Day Shred and only did 3, but I also did yoga.
- Kept a food log. I like the way My Fitness Pal keeps track of everything you eat, exercise, and even your weigh-ins, but it doesn't have a mobile app for my Blackberry, so I'm not using it to track my food. I'm carrying around an old-style notebook and pen. I didn't actually change my eating habits very much, but the fact that I was writing everything down kind of kept me in check to not overeat.
- I definitely drank more water than diet coke, but I don't think I reached my 8 glasses a day.
- Drink more water. I bought a cute 24oz. bottle that has an intake tracker, so if I drink 3 of these bottles a day, I should be good.
- Eat more protein & veggies and less sugar
- Keep up my 30 Day Shred workouts. Do at least 4 days this week.
So there you have it. Not a wildly successful week, but at least I'm motivated to keep it up and make more changes.

Wordless Wednesday 14: New Year's Eve
I was going through my photos to select for Wordless Wednesday when I remembered my New Year's Eve pics. I hadn't even noticed that they turned out so great! We had a great time. Enjoy!

Tackle it Tuesday 6: Zelma's Bakery Photos
For those of you who don't know, I have a home-based bakery business. I work full time in Corporate America and have a 4-year-old son, so I only do this on my spare time, which is not much, but it does keep me happy. I have a Facebook page, but I wanted to start my own blog (in Spanish), so that my local clients can get to know me and my products better.
I like to take photos of everything I make, and have TONS of photos! The only problem is, they were all scattered everywhere. Not all of the photos were uploaded into my Facebook page, and since my laptop crashed about 2 months ago, I had photos in my old hard disk, as well as my new one.
Well, I decided to upload everything into my new Flickr account. I categorized everything, and made sure everything had its watermark (for copyright purposes). It took me a LONG time, but I'm happy to have everything organized and in one place. Take a look!

The Power of One: Week 1 Recap
It has been one week since I posted about my new journey to weight loss and exercise. I was super psyched and made plans and everything. Then the days started to come and go, and I hadn't done a single thing. Every day I said "tomorrow, I'm definitely starting." And then, nothing.
What I didn't realize was that if I have a full-time job and a 4-year old son still on winter break, I had to organize myself BEFORE starting. Duh, right? Well, I didn't think of that until about 5 days into the week.
But today I definitely started. Yep, did my first yoga session and everything. Made my weekly meal plan, not just for me, but for my entire family. This week will be different. I got it.
Let's see what happened during my first week:
Last week’s weight: 195.4 (I still can't stand to look at that number!)
This week’s weight: 194.2 (well, at least I broke 195. Glass half-full, right?)
Total weight lost: 1.2 lbs
Total weight to lose: 64.2 lbs
First Goal: 10 lbs (I'm not even close!)
Accomplishments from last week: I actually drank less diet coke and more water than I usually do. But didn't make any breakthrough changes. I'll call it a teeny-tiny baby step.
Setbacks: Pretty much everything else. I didn't change my eating habits, and I didn't exercise. At all.
Goals for this week: (same as last week)
I was debating whether to post this week's "failure", but decided that if I failed, I might as well embarrass myself in front of everyone. Maybe that can be my motivation for getting off my ass and actually doing something. I mean, I already feel awful that I haven't done any exercise, and yet I'm reading about Rachel and Monica who are well into their second week of daily exercises... shame on me!
Also? For some reason, I lost 1.2 pounds. Even if I don't deserve it, I'll take it!

50 Posts: 50 Things You Didn't Know About Me
I can't believe I already have 50 posts, yay!
I'm so excited to share this with you. I've seen this type of post on the 100th post, but I am so unbelievably lazy and impatient that decided to post at 50. So grab your coffee, get comfy, and start reading:
1. I sang for President Reagan and Nancy when I was 10 years old.
2. Not counting Puerto Rico, I have traveled to a whopping 81 cities worldwide, 39 or 48% between the ages of 6 and 18.
3. My first singing solo was at 3 years old in church. My mom has a picture of me standing in a chair at the altar... Cute!
4. I'm a weird latina - my fave music genres are classical, pop, rock, and country (I know, right?)
5. On a related note, I'm a weird Puertorrican - I despise Raeggueton music (yuck!)
6. I'm a Scorpio in every sense of the word. Seriously, if you look up the personality traits of a Scorpio - the good, the bad, and the ugly - you will know me a lot better! I highly doubt you will want to know me after that, though.
7. When I was in high school, I dated the captain of the Basketball team. It was like a John Hughes movie. Good times.
8. I have never watched a Twilight movie. And don't plan to.
9. I watch The Disney Channel when I'm alone. Especially when I'm baking. It's the only channel where the commercials don't annoy me.
10. I could probably live on chocolate alone. I'd probably die, but I'd die happy.
11. My biggest pet peeve is bad drivers. Not a good thing when you live in Puerto Rico.
12. I'm obsessed with correct grammar and orthography when writing. I even proofread my tweets, so if there's an error, chances are it was on purpose.
13. I wish I could go to Walt Disney World 10 times a year. That, or move to Orlando, FL.
14. Oh, did I mention? Yes, I'm a former Cast Member. I worked at the Puerto Rico Disney Store from 1992-93 but learned so much that I wish I still worked there.
15. I live in a 100x35-mile caribbean island, and yet I only go to the beach about once a year. I'm not proud of that.
16. Once I was watching a football game and called Peyton Manning a "cutie patootie". Now everytime he appears on TV, hubs mentions that he's a cutie patootie. I think he's jealous.
17. I don't care for celebrities, and yet my guilty pleasure show is E! News.
18. I don't read newspapers or watch the local news. I find them depressing.
19. I hate politics. It turns normal people into assholes.
20. I was raised as a Roman Catholic, but I like learning about all religions in different countries. I find the different faiths and the history and culture behind them fascinating.
21. That being said, I hate fanatics. I actually like the fact that everyone believes in different things, depending on where they're from and their culture. People who don't accept those differences piss me off.
22. In the great cell phone debate, I'm a BlackBerry girl. I acknowledge the awesomeness and variety of apps and games of the iPhone, but I cannot handle a touch-screen keyboard.
23. I am writing this post using WordPress for BlackBerry :)
24. I am an extreme perfectionist. I expect only the best from me and everyone around me. I have a very low tolerance for mediocre people. OK, I hate them.
25. I do not have an addictive personality. I have dabbled in cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, and coffee, and yet have never felt that "need" that I've heard so much about.
26. I may just be the weirdest woman ever, but I don't have a shopping personality either. I only buy clothes and shoes if I need them, and only if they go with what I already have.
27. I don't like to change bags according to my outfit and/or occassion, like most women do. I wear the same bag every single day until I get tired of it, and then change it.
28. I do have one obsession: office supplies. I love journals and notebooks and pens. Every time I go to the drug store or convenience store, I have to check out the school & office supply section.
29. I don't like to talk about my immediate family (parents and siblings). Possibly because I had a non-conventional family dynamic, and am just now realizing that as an adult. My shrink and I are working on this.
30. I will say this: my parents divorced 4 years ago after 35 years of marriage. What they became after that made me change my opinion of them forever. I blame my dad.
31. 15 years ago I was in a sorority and partied 7 days a week. While studying and working part-time. Now I don't even remember the last time I went out partying. Unless Chuck E Cheese's counts as partying.
32. I play 4 musical instruments: piano, acoustic guitar, accordion, and recorder flute. Actually, of the 5 kinds of recorders that exist, I can play 3. So that's, what, 6 instruments?
33. When I was little, I took ballet, gymnastics, tennis, and swimming lessons. I'm fairly good at swimming, but other than that, I'm the worst athlete ever.
34. I am NOT politically correct. I like to speak my mind and usually forget about who will read/listen to what I'm saying. I have gotten into so much trouble in my career, that I now get other people to proofread my emails and memos before sending, to make sure I'm not insulting anyone. Have I mentioned that I hate Corporate America?
35. Writing 50 random things about me is hard, yo! Hubs is telling me stuff to write and I keep shutting him down.
36. I love love LOVE Christmas! From the decorations, to the music, to the way people get temporarily nice during the season. Hubs told me last week that my blog should have been called "Everyday Christmas". Why didn't you tell me this sooner!
37. I spent my Junior year of college as an Exchange Student in Trenton, NJ. Not the most glamorous city, but it was the closest one to New York City that was available. I spent MANY weekends in NY, and traveled extensively along the east coast, from Washington DC to Toronto.
38. Maybe I should have mentioned that New York City is my fave city in the US. I would move there in a heartbeat. Well, it's a tie between NY and Orlando. See #13.
39. I have sung in 5 choirs so far, almost consecutively since I was 6 years old.
40. I am NOT an affectionate person - hubs knows I don't do PDA - yet I can't stop myself from hugging and kissing lil man. All. The. Time. I may have a problem.
41. I love my little island. I love the fact that it's a mixture of Spanish, African, and American cultures. I love its history. I also love the convenience of being an American citizen, but hate the fact that politics and our political status is pretty much the national pasttime. See #19.
42. I like gays and lesbians. It may go against the Bible, but the Bible also says that everyone deserves love, and in my mind, love is love, no matter where you find it. Sure, it may have its complications when it comes to expanding the family (for logistics reasons, ha!), but then again, hubs won't go with me to get facials. We all have our pros and cons. :)
43. I have appeared in almost 10 operas and zarzuelas (Spanish version of an opera), both as a kid and as an adult, all of them as part of the choir, or "extras". I love dressing up in period costumes, and I love that I get to act and dance as well as sing.
44. My 3 favorite movies of all time are When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You've Got Mail. Let's just say I like Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Also? Hubs just pointed out that they all have to do with New York. Coincidence? I think not.
45. My 3 favorite TV series are Friends, Seinfeld, and Sex and the City. Guess where they're located? Ha! I swear I didn't do that on purpose.
46. I'm legally blind. I have a degenerative disease of my corneas called Keratoconus. I had sugery in 2003 but it was just to make it more manageable, not to cure it. I wear special contact lenses, and I can't wear glasses. Most people don't notice because I can see fine with my contacts. Not perfect, but fine.
47. The one place that I would like to visit before I die is Australia. more specifically, the Sydney Opera House.
48. I started dating hubs right after we met, but in the first 4 months we broke up twice. After that, it was all good.
49. I'm the complete opposite of romantic. However, I knew that I was going to spend the rest of my life with hubs about a month and a half after we met, WHILE we were broken up. When I told my Mom, I think she dropped a plate.
50. Hubs proposed while I was looking to buy an apartment for myself. When we left, he said "why don't we buy it together?" Me: "are you crazy? I'm not moving in with you unless we're married!" Hubs: "umm, that's pretty much what I'm implying here." I was driving and almost hit someone. I felt like an ass.
I'm so excited to share this with you. I've seen this type of post on the 100th post, but I am so unbelievably lazy and impatient that decided to post at 50. So grab your coffee, get comfy, and start reading:
*** Disclosure: These are all my personal and private opinions. If you disagree with something and feel like judging me, I suggest you stop reading and close this page immediately. I mean, seriously, isn't it better for your peace of mind if you DON'T read stuff you don't agree with?

DIY Marshmallow Lollipops
Do you want a fun treat that you can do with your kids? I made chocolate-covered marshmallow lollipops, and lil man was very excited to help me make them.
You will need:
Here's how to make them:
1. Fill a medium saucepan with water half-way. Heat on Medium-High.
2. Place candy wafers in glass bowl and place bowl on top of the saucepan. Make sure the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water.
3. Let chocolate melt, about 5-10 minutes. When the wafers become shiny, you can start stirring with a wooden or silicone spoon/spatula.
4. While the chocolate is melting, you can prepare the lollipops. Insert sticks into marshmallows and place upside down in the tray.
5. Prepare sprinkles, if you're using them. Use shallow trays or bowls.
6. Make sure chocolate is completely melted before starting. Do not remove it from the boiling water to prevent cooling/hardening.
7. Dip each marshmallow into the chocolate, making sure to coat the bottom and all around. Tap lightly to remove any excess chocolate.
8. Dip the chocolate-covered marshmallow in the sprinkles, again making sure to coat the bottom and all around. Or, you can coat the sides and leave the bottom un-sprinkled, your choice.
9. Place the decorated lollipop in the paper-lined tray to cool and harden.
10. Repeat with the rest of the marshmallows. You can use different kinds of sprinkles, or leave them un-sprinkled. You're the chef!
11. Once they have cooled and hardened, dig in!
I hope you enjoy making these. Let me know what you think!
You will need:
- Marshmallows - try to use Kraft Jet-Puffed, they're the best ones
- Candy Wafers - Milk or Dark
- Lollipop sticks or skewers
- Sprinkles (optional)
- Medium-sized saucepan
- Glass bowl (like Pyrex)
- Cookie sheet or other tray, lined with parchment paper

The Power of One: The Beginning
Those of you who know me, or simply have seen my pics or read my blog, know one thing: I'm fat. I've always been overweight, but when lil man was born in 2006, I gained 40 lbs and only lost 20. I had been told that breastfeeding would help shred those last lbs.... BAHAHA!! Ya right, I lost all of ZERO pounds!
Since then, I've battled a miscarriage, depression, hypothyroidism, and more importantly, laziness. For more on my battles, read here. In the past 4 years, I have tried to start many things, but have not been able to follow through. So I'm basically at the same place I was then. Ugh.
Last week, I decided to write my first New Year's resolutions, EVER! Read here. I know, pathetic, right? But if I had never made them before, and I'm still in the same place, then I thought I might as well give in and make some. Well, as most women do, most of my resolutions had to do with my health and weight. But I didn't know where to start!
Enter Monica. I saw a tweet from her mentioning the Sisterhood of Shrinking Jeans, and I thought: this is hilarious! I browsed their website, and it looked like a lot of fun, so I decided to join them. I'm still not familiar with all the ins and outs of the Sisterhood, but they have "challenges" that span several weeks, weekly weigh-ins and projects, and tons of tips and support.
So this is it.
I weighed myself today. 195.4. WHAT?!?!? I almost didn't post my weight, I was so embarrassed. I also took a "before" picture of myself. Ya right, like I'm going to post that! That's for my personal use only, and will NEVER show it to anyone. How did I let myself get here? That is such a loaded question, that I decided not to answer it, and simply move on.
And I'm moving on.
So today, even though it's the end of week 1 of the challenge, it's actually day 1 for me. I don't care. I will simply try to keep up and do my best.
Here's the checklist that I will be updating weekly:
Last week's weight: n/a
This week's weight: 195.4 (holy crap, did I just type that AGAIN?!?)
Total weight to lose: 65.4 (Yikes!)
Total weight lost: 0 lbs
First Goal: 10 lbs
Accomplishments from last week: None. Unless you count writing this post as an achievement. In that case, yay me!
Setbacks: I already ate one of the chocolate-covered marshmallow lollipops that I had made for lil man. Major fail!
Goals for this week:
And there you have it. I got the idea for this checklist from Tiffany's weight-loss posts. I like checklists. They're simple and easy to read.
OK, I'll shut up now. Gotta stop writing about it and actually get started on my journey. Do you have any tips and/or suggestions for me? Words of wisdom? Constructive criticism? Sound off below!
And wish me luck!

Goals for this week:

- Eat more protein & veggies and less sugar
- Start Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred. Do at least 4-5 days this week. On off days, I can do yoga from another DVD or my Wii Fit.

Tackle it Tuesday 5: The Laundry Surprise
Last night I decided to do lil man's laundry, because it had been a couple of weeks since I had done it. Yes, you can judge all you want, but lil man has tons of clothes, so I can afford to do his laundry every couple of weeks.
Anyway, as I was emptying out his hamper in the washer, the last of the clothes dropped unexpectedly with a loud "thump". I thought, clothes don't make a loud sound, do they? So I decided to investigate, and dug into the washer to see what had dropped in there.
"Hubs?"
"Yeah?"
"You remember lil man's pair of blue sneakers that we can't find anywhere?"
"Yeah?"
"Guess what I just found in the bottom of the laundry basket?"
"What?!?"
"Yep."
"No way!"
"Well, I guess we solved THAT mystery!"
There's never a dull moment when you're a parent.
If you have a Tackle it Tuesday post, link it here for others to see!
